Introduction of LiDAR Systems and Practical Applications

Description

Dr Chou will first give an introduction of LiDAR system and how it has originally developed to perform remote optical sensing thus a guidance could be made for a response. Further applications of LiDAR system have been derived and used in air and ground applications. The self driving vehicle has been benefited from LiDAR and it provides a fundamental technology for automats driving.

An introduction of conventional mechanical and solid state LiDAR systems will be presented and discussed.

Dr HP Chou received his MS and PhD degrees from University of Southampton, U.K. He worked at Chen-Kung University (Taiwan), then UTSI, Tennessee, AVCO Research Lab., Everett, MA., and Textron Systems Corp., Wilmington, MA., and has more than 30 years of R&D experience in wide range of lasers and electro-optics: laser and lasers system research, design and development; modeling and experimenting laser and nonlinear optical systems; development of cooling techniques for high power intra-cavity AO modulator; design and development of ultra-efficient and compact diamond cooled SS laser under DARPA sponsored program; design and development of laser radar (Lidar)) systems under NASA's LAWS program (satellite Lidar device) and FLD ground base laser radar system contracted by Air Force. He has published more than 30 papers and owned three patents.

What's 5G? How a New Wireless Technology Will Change the World

This requires a massive increase in the level of connectivity.

5G is the technological answer, making possible billions of new connections, and making those connections secure and instantaneous. 5G will impact every industry – autos, healthcare, manufacturing and distribution, emergency services, just to name a few. And 5G is purposely designed so that these industries can take advantage of cellular connectivity in ways that wouldn’t have been possible before, and to scale upwards as use of 5G expands.

Gary will share his own observation on how 5G, AI and IoT can change the world and 5G key technology.

Advances in Wireless Communication: 5G and LI-FI

The speaker will present the technology behind 5G and Light Fidelity. Come and learn about them!

 

5G is the next generation wireless communication technology and it promises a whole suite of dramatic improvements. It can achieve speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G, 100 times more connected devices, 100x energy efficiency,  and10x latency reduction. It will help kick-start the Internet of Things, since it was designed to connect billions of machines, appliances, and sensors at low cost without draining their batteries.

Li-Fi is a new technology that uses light to transmit data. It offers several advantages like working across higher bandwidth, working in areas susceptible to electromagnetic interference (e.g. aircraft cabins, hospitals) and offering higher transmission speeds.

This two hour seminar will present an overview of 5G (technology, new capabilities, applications) and also present Li-FI technology (how it works, Li-Fi vs Wi-Fi, advantages, disadvantages, and applications)

Speaker Bio: Dr. William Kao received his BSEE, MSEE and PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He worked in the Semiconductor and Electronic Design Automation industries for more than 30 years holding several senior and executive engineering management positions at Texas Instruments, Xerox Corporation, Cadence Design Systems.

 Dr. Kao has authored more than 50 technical papers at IEEE Journals and Conferences, and holds eight software and IC design patents. He was an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Electrical Engineering Department where he taught courses in computer aided IC design.

Dr. Kao is a Senior Member of IEEE, and was one of the founding members of IEEE-Circuits and Systems - Silicon Valley Chapter.

Dr. Kao teaches Renewable Energy, Clean Technology and Business Sustainability courses at the University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Extension. 

Dr. Kao current interests include the subjects of Energy, Environment and Education.

He teaches and is a frequent lecturer on various Emerging Technologies including Clean Technology, Renewable Energy,  Big Data and Data Analytics, IoT, Smart Cities, Sensor Networks, Innovation, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Robotics, AI / Machine Learning, AR/VR  and 3D Printing.
