Talk Title: Flywheel Energy Storage: The Utility Scale Energy Storage Solution
Abstract: Energy storage is now emerging as an essential electric utility resource to effectively enable higher penetration levels of variable renewable generation resources. In California, in response to RPS mandates for increased renewable penetration, Assembly Bill 2514, in conjunction with CPUC rulings, has called for 1.3 GW of flexible energy storage to be incorporated into the energy mix by the three California IOUs during the next few years. The talk will review the energy storage landscape, in terms of opportunity, established and emerging storage technologies, and commercial progress. The talk will focus advanced flywheel energy storage to meet utility scale challenges. In short, a flywheel functions as a battery, with kinetic energy storage replacing conventional electrochemical processes. During the past 20-30 years, there has been a general belief in the power systems community that flywheels are only suited to short term applications, for example in frequency regulation, grid stability enhancement, voltage support, and in UPS and transit system applications. This is not the case, and the talk will outline how flywheels can be economically designed to meet multi-hour energy shifting applications, that are essential for provision of capacity, and extended integration of variable renewable generation. Some details on product and project development at grid scale energy storage start-up Amber Kinetics will be discussed.

CO-FOUNDER & CHIEF SCIENTIST of Amber Kinetics
Seth Sanders, PhD, Amber Kinetics, Inc.Dr. Sanders is a co-founder of Amber Kinetics and a leading expert in flywheel energy technology, power electronics, and power conversion technologies.
He began exploring flywheel energy storage systems in the mid-1990s as a professor of engineering in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department at the University of California-Berkeley. Publication on this early work received the first prize paper award when presented at the IEEE IAS annual meeting in 1998.
He followed his work with the conception, design, fabrication and test of a fully integrated homopolar motor/generator flywheel system. This system featured a solid steel rotor, but was fabricated solely from high strength alloy steel, similar to that used in the present Amber Kinetics rotor designs.
Dr. Sanders has extensive experience as an electric machine designer and electric machine control system designer. Since his days as an undergraduate and graduate student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he has carried out projects centered on induction machines and on permanent magnet machines. These have been as primary research projects and as supporting system components in numerous projects.
Dr. Sanders received his bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees and his PhD in electrical engineering from MIT. He has served as chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computers in Power Electronics and as a member-at-large of the IEEE PELS Adcom.
Talk Title: An Overview of Energy Storage, and Recent ES Developments
This seminar will present a comprehensive overview of energy storage methods, and applications. It will discuss the need for Energy Storage Systems (ESS), the role of Energy Storage Systems in modern electrical power systems, and their grid integration with renewable-based generation. It will cover all forms of energy storage (electrical, mechanical, thermal, electro-chemical), for both grid and home based energy storage.
A special focus on lithium ion batteries and next technologies beyond lithium-ion will be discussed.
Speaker: Dr. William Kao
Speaker Bio: Dr. William Kao received his BSEE, MSEE and PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He worked in the Semiconductor and Electronic Design Automation industries for more than 30 years holding several senior and executive engineering management positions at Texas Instruments, Xerox Corporation, Cadence Design Systems.
Dr. Kao has authored more than 40 technical papers at IEEE Journals and Conferences, and holds eight US software and IC design patents. He was an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Electrical Engineering Department where he taught courses in computer aided IC design.
Dr. Kao is a Senior Member of IEEE, and was one of the founding members of IEEE-Circuits and Systems - Silicon Valley Chapter, where he was Chapter Chair in 2005 and 2006.
Dr. Kao currently teaches Renewable Energy, Clean Technology and Business Sustainability courses at the University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Extension.
Dr. Kao current interests include the subjects of Energy, Environment and Education.
He teaches and is a frequent lecturer on various Emerging Technologies. In the past five years he has given over 50 talks and seminars on various emerging technology topics such as Clean Technology, Renewable Energy, Big Data, IoT, Smart Cities, Sensor Networks, Innovation, AR/VR, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and 3D Printing.
