Objective
CIE/USA is a scientific and educational organization. The objective of CIE/USA is to promote communication and the interchange of information among engineers and scientists in the various fields of engineering science who are interested in the well-being of the Chinese engineering community in the U.S. and abroad.
Historical Notes
The Chinese Institute of Engineers was founded in 1917 in the United States by a group of able, dedicated and
far-sighted Chinese engineers who graduated from the American colleges and were trained in American railroads
and various industries. The main organization then moved to China and its American counterpart became a
separate chapter. This status remained through two world wars until 1949.
On July 15, 1953 the chapter in the United States was reactivated as an independent entity known as CIE,
New York. It was formally registered in the state of New York in 1963 as the Chinese Institute of Engineers,
New York, Inc., a non-profit organization.
In 1977, the institute renamed the Chinese Institute of Engineers, USA or CIE/USA whose activities involve
members from all parts of the United States of America. In 1977, the institute renamed the Chinese Institute

Chinese engineers in the San Francisco Bay Area have played a significant role in the rapid growth of
technology. In response to the need to promote better communication and organization among Chinese
engineers in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Bay area chapter was founded in April 1979. From an
initial membership of 40 members, the chapter has grown to 900 members, 200 of which are permanent members.
In order to present an opportunity to integrate and accommodate other technical professionals with a
Chinese heritage, the National Council of CIE/USA was formed on November8, 1986. Presently the National
Council consists of the greater New York, San Francisco Bay, Seattle, and Dallas/Fort Worth areas, and
OCEESA Chapters. This union advances the welfare of Chinese American engineers by promoting larger scale
enterprises with nationwide participation.
