Asian American Engineer of the Year Award

Chinese Institute of Engineers, USA (CIE/USA) is proud to co-sponsor the National Engineers Week 2004 and is currently working with other national engineering societies such as the National E-Week Steering Committee to plan and develop many exciting programs. A highlight of the E-Week 2004 celebration in San Francisco Bay Area is the Asian American Engineer of the Year Award Banquet which will be hosted by CIE/USA and it will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2004 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Marriott Hotel Great America, Santa Clara.

The Asian American Engineer of the Year Award Banquet is the only program of its kind in conjunction with the celebration of the National Engineers Week in the United States. One of the primary goals of this award program is to create a meaningful platform to recognize outstanding Asian American professionals in academe, public services and corporate entities for their great contributions to our nation and communities. This is the third consecutive year that CIE/USA hosts this great event, but it is the first time it will be held in northern California.

In addition to honoring the Asian-American engineers of the year at the award banquet, two special awards will be presented to Asian American engineers who have distinguished lifetime achievements in science and technology. Previous award recipients include Dr. Leo Esaki, the 1973 Nobel Prize winner in Physics; Dr. Chang-Lin Tien, former chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley; Dr. Samuel Chao-Chung Ting, the 1976 Nobel Prize winner in Physics; and Dr. Chih-Tang Sah, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. Currently, the Asian-American Engineer of the Year 2004 Award Committee is working diligently to select the finalists. The award recipients will be announced in mid-February.

This historical event has received strong corporate, community, academic and government support. More than a dozen organizations have sponsored the event, and nearly 800 distinguished guests, honorees, corporate executives and community leaders will attend the award banquet.

Barry Lin, Chairman of the CIE/USA National Council and Board Member of The National Engineers Week Steering Committee, along with Belle Wei, Honorary Chairwoman of E-Week 2004 Asian-American Engineer of the Year Award Banquet and David Fong, Executive Chairman of the Award Committee, cordially invite you to support and participate in this exciting banquet. All CIE/USA Area Chapters in the US including Dallas/Ft. Worth Chapter, New Mexico Chapter, Greater New York Chapter, OCEESA Chapter, San Francisco Chapter and Seattle Chapter will also participate in this great event along with many corporate sponsors, professional societies, universities and local communities.

The CIE/USA San Francisco Chapter has actively participated in many local engineering community events including supporting the “2004 National Engineers Week Future City Competition” program held on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Santa Clara University. This program was a National Engineers Week program for seventh and eighth-grade students to foster interest in mathematics, science and engineering through hands-on, real world applications. The competition was open to all public, private, and parochial schools in selected areas. CIE/USA was sponsoring a special award in the category of “Ceramics Use”. A national final competition will be held in Washington, DC on February 22–26, 2004.

The CIE/USA San Francisco Chapter will also hold the 25th Annual Winter Conference in conjunction with the National E-Week event. The Winter Conference will take place on Saturday February 28, 2004 from 1:30 pm to
5:00 pm at Marriott Hotel Great America, Santa Clara. The afternoon activities include Technical Seminars and Youth Achievement Award Ceremony. Ten outstanding high school students will be selected for the awards; they are juniors and seniors.

The afternoon activities will be open to the public free of admission while the evening National Engineers Week 2004 event will be limited to ticket holders.
