September 2004

CIE/USA San Francisco chapter’s MMT (Mechanical and Material Technologies) Group organized a technical seminar on deployment of Taiwan’s No 2 satellite on July 16, 2004. Dr. J. S. Chern, the chief engineer of the No 2 satellite, was the honor speaker of this seminar. Dr. Joseph Yang, Director of the San Francisco Bay Area Science Division, was the host of this seminar.

According to Dr. Chern, , Taiwan’s NSPO (National Space Program Office) has been working in design and launching of satellite for the last fifteen years under the guidance of Taiwan’s National Science Council. The No 2 satellite (also named as the Formosa satellite) was successfully launched in May 2004 at southern California’s Vendenberg AFB.

During the seminar, Dr. Chern presented major characteristics, missions, and module designs of the No 2 satellite. Dr. Chern also described the tedious and time consuming testing/launching process. After the successful launch of the No 2 satellite, NSPO can now receive very detailed out of space photo pictures taken the satellite.
